Surah Al-'Ankabut — The Spider

Surah 29 · 69 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

Alif lām mīm.

Alif, Lām, Meem.

Ayah 2

Aḥasiban-nāsu ay yutrakū ay yaqūlū āmannā wa hum lā yuftanūn(a).

Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?

Ayah 3

Wa laqad fatannal-lażīna min qablihim falaya‘lamannallāhul-lażīna ṣadaqū wa laya‘lamannal-kāżibīn(a).

But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.

Ayah 4

Am ḥasibal-lażīna ya‘malūnas-sayyi'āti ay yasbiqūnā, sā'a mā yaḥkumūn(a).

Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun [i.e., escape] Us? Evil is what they judge.

Ayah 5

Man kāna yarjū liqā'allāhi fa'inna ajalallāhi la'āt(in), wa huwas-samī‘ul-‘alīm(u).

Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allāh - indeed, the term [decreed by] Allāh is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Ayah 6

Wa man jāhada fa'innamā yujāhidu linafsih(ī), innallāha laganiyyun ‘anil-‘ālamīn(a).

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allāh is Free from need of the worlds.

Ayah 7

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.

Ayah 8

Wa waṣṣainal-insāna biwālidaihi ḥusnā(n), wa in jāhadāka litusyrika bī mā laisa laka bihī ‘ilmun falā tuṭi‘humā, ilayya marji‘ukum fa'unabbi'ukum bimā kuntum ta‘malūn(a).

And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

Ayah 9

Wal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti lanudkhilannahum fiṣ-ṣāliḥīn(a).

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].

Ayah 10

Wa minan-nāsi may yaqūlu āmannā billāhi fa'iżā ūżiya fillāhi ja‘ala fitnatan-nāsi ka‘ażābillāh(i), wa la'in jā'a naṣrum mir rabbika layaqūlunna innā kunnā ma‘akum, awa laisallāhu bi'a‘lama bimā fī ṣudūril-‘ālamīn(a).

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?

Ayah 11

Wa laya‘lamannallāhul-lażīna āmanū wa laya‘lamannal-munāfiqīn(a).

And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.

Ayah 12

Wa qālal-lażīna kafarū lil-lażīna āmanuttabi‘ū sabīlanā walnaḥmil khaṭāyākum, wa mā hum biḥāmilīna min khaṭāyāhum min syai'(in), innahum lakāżibūn(a).

And those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will carry your sins." But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars.

Ayah 13

Wa layaḥmilunna aṡqālahum wa aṡqālam ma‘a aṡqālihim wa layus'alunna yaumal-qiyāmati ‘ammā kānū yaftarūn(a).

But they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.

Ayah 14

Wa laqad arsalnā nūḥan ilā qaumihī falabiṡa fīhim alfa sanatin illā khamsīna ‘āmā(n), fa'akhażahumuṭ-ṭūfānu wa hum ẓālimūn(a).

And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.

Ayah 15

Fa'anjaināhu wa aṣḥābas-safīnati wa ja‘alnāhā āyatal lil-‘ālamīn(a).

But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it a sign for the worlds.

Ayah 16

Wa ibrāhīma iż qāla liqaumihi‘budullāha wattaqūh(u), żālikum khairul lakum in kuntum ta‘lamūn(a).

And [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, "Worship Allāh and fear Him. That is best for you, if you should know.

Ayah 17

Innamā ta‘budūna min dūnillāhi auṡānaw wa takhluqūna ifkā(n), innal-lażīna ta‘budūna min dūnillāhi lā yamlikūna lakum rizqan fabtagū ‘indallāhir-rizqa wa‘budūhu wasykurū lah(ū), ilaihi turja‘ūn(a).

You only worship, besides Allāh, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allāh provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."

Ayah 18

Wa in tukażżibū faqad każżaba umamum min qablikum, wa mā ‘alar-rasūli illal-balāgul-mubīn(u).

And if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.

Ayah 19

Awalam yarau kaifa yubdi'ullāhul-khalqa ṡumma yu‘īduh(ū), inna żālika ‘alallāhi yasīr(un).

Have they not considered how Allāh begins creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.

Ayah 20

Qul sīrū fil-arḍi fanẓurū kaifa bada'al-khalqa ṡummallāhu yunsyi'un-nasy'atal-ākhirah(ta), innallāha ‘alā kulli syai'in qadīr(un).

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."

Ayah 21

Yu‘ażżibu may yasyā'u wa yarḥamu may yasyā'(u), wa ilaihi tuqlabūn(a).

He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.

Ayah 22

Wa mā antum bimu‘jizīna fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā'(i), wa mā lakum min dūnillāhi miw waliyyiw wa lā naṣīr(in).

And you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.

Ayah 23

And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.

Ayah 24

Famā kāna jawāba qaumihī illā an qaluqtulūhu au ḥarriqūhu fa anjāhullāhu minan-nār(i), inna fī żālika la'āyātil liqaumiy yu'minūn(a).

And the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

Ayah 25

Wa qāla innamattakhażtum min dūnillāhi auṡānam mawaddata bainikum fil-ḥayātid-dun-yā, ṡumma yaumal-qiyāmati yakfuru ba‘ḍukum biba‘ḍiw wa yal‘anu ba‘ḍukum ba‘ḍā(n), wa ma'wākumun nāru wa mā lakum min nāṣirīn(a).

And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allāh, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."

Ayah 26

Fa āmana lahū lūṭ(un), wa qāla innī muhājirun ilā rabbī, innahū huwal-‘azīzul-ḥakīm(u).

And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

Ayah 27

And We gave to him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.

Ayah 28

Wa lūṭan iż qāla liqaumihī innakum lata'tūnal-fāḥisyata mā sabaqakum bihā min aḥadim minal-‘ālamīn(a).

And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds.

Ayah 29

A'innakum lata'tūnar-rijāla wa taqṭa‘ūnas-sabīl(a), wa ta'tūna fī nādīkumul-munkar(a), famā kāna jawāba qaumihī illā an qālu'tinā bi‘ażābillāhi in kunta minaṣ-ṣādiqīn(a).

Indeed, you approach men and obstruct the road and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but that they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allāh, if you should be of the truthful."

Ayah 30

Qāla rabbinṣurnī ‘alal-qaumil-mufsidīn(a).

He said, "My Lord, support me against the corrupting people."

Ayah 31

Wa lammā jā'at rusulunā ibrāhīma bil-busyrā, qālū innā muhlikū ahli hāżihil-qaryah(ti), inna ahlahā kānū ẓālimīn(a).

And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that [i.e., Lot's] city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."

Ayah 32

Qāla inna fīhā lūṭā(n), qālū naḥnu a‘lamu biman fīhā, lanunajjiyannahū wa ahlahū illamra'atahū kānat minal-gābirīn(a).

[Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind."

Ayah 33

Wa lammā an jā'at rusulunā lūṭan sī'a bihim wa ḍāqa bihim żar‘aw wa qālū lā takhaf wa lā taḥzan, innā munajjūka wa ahlaka illamra'ataka kānat minal-gābirīn(a).

And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort. They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind.

Ayah 34

Innā munzilūna ‘alā ahli hāżihil-qaryati rijzam minas-samā'i bimā kānū yafsuqūn(a).

Indeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."

Ayah 35

Wa laqad taraknā minhā āyatam bayyinatal liqaumiy ya‘qilūn(a).

And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.

Ayah 36

Wa ilā madyana akhāhum syu‘aibā(n), faqāla yā qaumi‘budullāha warjul-yaumal-ākhira wa lā ta‘ṡau fil-arḍi mufsidīn(a).

And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."

Ayah 37

Fa każżabūhu fa'akhażathumur-rajfatu fa'aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāṡimīn(a).

But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.

Ayah 38

Wa ‘ādaw wa ṡamūda wa qat tabayyana lakum mim masākinihim, wa zayyana lahumusy-syaiṭānu a‘mālahum faṣaddahum ‘anis-sabīli wa kānū mustabṣirīn(a).

And [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception.

Ayah 39

Wa qārūna wa fir‘auna wa hāmān(a), wa laqad jā'ahum mūsā bil-bayyināti fastakbarū fil-arḍi wa mā kānū sābiqīn(a).

And [We destroyed] Qārūn and Pharaoh and Hāmān. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment].

Ayah 40

Fakullan akhażnā biżambih(ī), faminhum man arsalnā ‘alaihi ḥāṣibā(n), wa minhum man akhażathuṣ-ṣaiḥah(tu), wa minhum man khasafnā bihil-arḍ(a), wa minhum man agraqnā, wa mā kānallāhu liyaẓlimahum wa lākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn(a).

So each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allāh would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.

Ayah 41

Maṡalul-lażīnattakhażū min dūnillāhi auliyā'a kamaṡalil-‘ankabūt(i), ittakhażat baitā(n), wa inna auhanal-buyūti labaitul-‘ankabūt(i), lau kānū ya‘lamūn(a).

The example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.

Ayah 42

Innallāha ya‘lamu mā yad‘ūna min dūnihī min syai'(in), wa huwal-‘azīzul-ḥakīm(u).

Indeed, Allāh knows whatever thing they call upon other than Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Ayah 43

Wa tilkal-amṡālu naḍribuhā lin-nās(i), wa mā ya‘qiluhā illal-‘ālimūn(a).

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

Ayah 44

Khalaqallāhus-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqq(i), inna fī żālika la'āyatal lil-mu'minīn(a).

Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

Ayah 45

Utlu mā ūḥiya ilaika minal-kitābi wa aqimiṣ-ṣalāh(ta), innaṣ-ṣalāta tanhā ‘anil-faḥsyā'i wal-munkar(i), wa lażikrullāhi akbar(u), wallāhu ya‘lamu mā taṣna‘ūn(a).

Recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.

Ayah 46

Wa lā tujādilū ahlal-kitābi illā bil-latī hiya aḥsan(u), illal-lażīna ẓalamū minhum wa qūlū āmannā bil-lażī unzila ilainā wa unzila ilaikum wa ilāhunā wa ilāhukum wāḥiduw wa naḥnu lahū muslimūn(a).

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

Ayah 47

Wa każālika anzalnā ilaikal-kitāb(a), fal-lażīna ātaināhumul-kitāba yu'minūna bih(ī), wa min hā'ulā'i may yu'minu bih(ī), wa mā yajḥadu bi'āyātinā illal-kāfirūn(a).

And thus We have sent down to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān]. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.

Ayah 48

Wa mā kunta tatlū min qablihī min kitābiw wa lā takhuṭṭuhū biyamīnika iżal lartābal-mubṭilūn(a).

And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Then [i.e., otherwise] the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.

Ayah 49

Bal huwa āyātum bayyinātun fī ṣudūril-lażīna ūtul-‘ilm(a), wa mā yajḥadu bi'āyātinā illaẓ-ẓālimūn(a).

Rather, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.

Ayah 50

Wa qālū lau lā unzila ‘alaihi āyātum mir rabbih(ī), qul innamal-āyātu ‘indallāh(i), wa innamā ana nażīrum mubīn(un).

But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."

Ayah 51

Awalam yakfihim annā anzalnā ‘alaikal-kitāba yutlā ‘alaihim, inna fī żālika laraḥmataw wa żikrā liqaumiy yu'minūn(a).

And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.

Ayah 52

Qul kafā billāhi bainī wa bainakum syahīdā(n), ya‘lamu mā fis-samāwāti wal-arḍ(i), wal-lażīna āmanū bil-bāṭili wa kafarū billāhi ulā'ika humul-khāsirūn(a).

Say, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."

Ayah 53

Wa yasta‘jilūnaka bil-‘ażāb(i), wa lau lā ajalum musammal lajā'ahumul-‘ażāb(u), wa laya'tiyannahum bagtataw wa hum lā yasy‘urūn(a).

And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.

Ayah 54

Yasta‘jilūnaka bil-‘ażāb(i), wa inna jahannama lamuḥīṭatum bil-kāfirīn(a).

They urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers

Ayah 55

Yauma yagsyāhumul-‘ażābu min fauqihim wa min taḥti arjulihim wa yaqūlu żūqū mā kuntum ta‘malūn(a).

On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."

Ayah 56

Yā ‘ibādiyal-lażīna āmanū inna arḍī wāsi‘atun fa iyyāya fa‘budūn(i).

O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.

Ayah 57

Kullu nafsin żā'iqatul-maut(i), ṡumma ilainā turja‘ūn(a).

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

Ayah 58

Wal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti lanubawwi'annahum minal-jannati gurafan tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā, ni‘ma ajrul-‘āmilīn(a).

And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers

Ayah 59

Al-lażīna ṣabarū wa ‘alā rabbihim yatawakkalūn(a).

Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.

Ayah 60

Wa ka'ayyim min dābbatil lā taḥmilu rizqahā, allāhu yarzuquhā wa iyyākum, wa huwas-samī‘ul-‘alīm(u).

And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Ayah 61

Wa la'in sa'altahum man khalaqas-samāwāti wal-arḍa wa sakhkharasy-syamsa wal-qamara layaqūlunnallāh(u), fa'annā yu'fakūn(a).

If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Then how are they deluded?

Ayah 62

Allāhu yabsuṭur-rizqa limay yasyā'u min ‘ibādihī wa yaqdiru lah(ū), innallāha bikulli syai'in ‘alīm(un).

Allāh extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.

Ayah 63

Wa la'in sa'altahum man nazzala minas-samā'i mā'an fa'aḥyā bihil-arḍa mim ba‘di mautihā layaqūlunnallāh(u), qulil-ḥamdu lillāh(i), bal akṡaruhum lā ya‘qilūn(a).

And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Praise to Allāh"; but most of them do not reason.

Ayah 64

Wa mā hāżihil-ḥayātud-dun-yā illā lahwuw wa la‘ib(un), wa innad-dāral-ākhirata lahiyal-ḥayawān(u), lau kānū ya‘lamūn(a).

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

Ayah 65

Fa'iżā rakibū fil-fulki da‘awullāha mukhliṣīna lahud-dīn(a), falammā najjāhum ilal-barri iżā hum yusyrikūn(a).

And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith and hope]. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him

Ayah 66

Liyakfurū bimā ātaināhum wa liyatamatta‘ū, fasaufa ya‘lamūn(a).

So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.

Ayah 67

Awalam yarau annā ja‘alnā ḥaraman āminaw wa yutakhaṭṭafun-nāsu min ḥaulihim, afabil-bāṭili yu'minūna wa bini‘matillāhi yakfurūn(a).

Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?

Ayah 68

Wa man aẓlamu mimmaniftarā ‘alallāhi każiban au każżaba bil-ḥaqqi lammā jā'ah(ū), alaisa fī jahannama maṡwal lil-kāfirīn(a).

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?

Ayah 69

Wal-lażīna jāhadū fīnā lanahdiyannahum subulanā, wa innallāha lama‘al-muḥsinīn(a).

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good.
