Surah Al-Fajr — The Dawn

Surah 89 · 30 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

وَالْفَجْرِۙ

Wal-fajr(i).

By the dawn

Ayah 2

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍۙ

Wa layālin ‘asyr(in).

And [by] ten nights

Ayah 3

وَّالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِۙ

Wasy-syaf‘i wal-watr(i).

And [by] the even [number] and the odd

Ayah 4

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَسْرِۚ

Wal-laili iżā yasr(i).

And [by] the night when it passes,

Ayah 5

هَلْ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِيْ حِجْرٍۗ

Hal fī żālika qasamul liżī ḥijr(in).

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

Ayah 6

اَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍۖ

Alam tara kaifa fa‘ala rabbuka bi‘ād(in).

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -

Ayah 7

اِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِۖ

Irama żātil-‘imād(i).

[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,

Ayah 8

الَّتِيْ لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى الْبِلَادِۖ

Allatī lam yukhlaq miṡluhā fil-bilād(i).

The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

Ayah 9

وَثَمُوْدَ الَّذِيْنَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِۖ

Wa ṡamūdal-lażīna jābuṣ-ṣakhra bil-wād(i).

And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

Ayah 10

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى الْاَوْتَادِۖ

Wa fir‘auna żil-autād(i).

And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?

Ayah 11

الَّذِيْنَ طَغَوْا فِى الْبِلَادِۖ

Allażīna ṭagau fil-bilād(i).

[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

Ayah 12

فَاَكْثَرُوْا فِيْهَا الْفَسَادَۖ

Fa akṡarū fīhal-fasād(a).

And increased therein the corruption.

Ayah 13

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍۖ

Fa ṣabba ‘alaihim rabbuka sauṭa ‘ażāb(in).

So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

Ayah 14

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِۗ

Inna rabbaka labil-mirṣād(i).

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

Ayah 15

فَاَمَّا الْاِنْسَانُ اِذَا مَا ابْتَلٰىهُ رَبُّهٗ فَاَكْرَمَهٗ وَنَعَّمَهٗۙ فَيَقُوْلُ رَبِّيْٓ اَكْرَمَنِۗ

Fa ammal-insānu iżā mabtalāhu rabbuhū fa akramahū wa na‘‘amah(ū), fa yaqūlu rabbī akraman(i).

And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

Ayah 16

وَاَمَّآ اِذَا مَا ابْتَلٰىهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهٗ ەۙ فَيَقُوْلُ رَبِّيْٓ اَهَانَنِۚ

Wa ammā iżā mabtalāhu fa qadara ‘alaihi rizqah(ū), fa yaqūlu rabbī ahānan(i).

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

Ayah 17

كَلَّا بَلْ لَّا تُكْرِمُوْنَ الْيَتِيْمَۙ

Kallā bal lā tukrimūnal-yatīm(a).

No! But you do not honor the orphan

Ayah 18

وَلَا تَحٰۤضُّوْنَ عَلٰى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِيْنِۙ

Wa lā taḥāḍḍūna ‘alā ṭa‘āmil-miskīn(i).

And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

Ayah 19

وَتَأْكُلُوْنَ التُّرَاثَ اَكْلًا لَّمًّاۙ

Wa ta'kulūnat-turāṡa aklal lammā(n).

And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,

Ayah 20

وَّتُحِبُّوْنَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّاۗ

Wa tuḥibbūnal-māla ḥubban jammā(n).

And you love wealth with immense love.

Ayah 21

كَلَّآ اِذَا دُكَّتِ الْاَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّاۙ

Kallā iżā dukkatil-arḍu dakkan dakkā(n).

No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed

Ayah 22

وَّجَاۤءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّاۚ

Wa jā'a rabbuka wal-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffā(n).

And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,

Ayah 23

وَجِايْۤءَ يَوْمَىِٕذٍۢ بِجَهَنَّمَۙ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ يَّتَذَكَّرُ الْاِنْسَانُ وَاَنّٰى لَهُ الذِّكْرٰىۗ

Wa jī'a yauma'iżim bijahannam(a), yauma'iżiy yatażakkarul-insānu wa annā lahuż-żikrā.

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?

Ayah 24

يَقُوْلُ يٰلَيْتَنِيْ قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِيْۚ

Yaqūlu yā laitanī qaddamtu liḥayātī.

He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."

Ayah 25

فَيَوْمَىِٕذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهٗٓ اَحَدٌ ۙ

Fa yauma'iżil lā yu‘ażżibu ‘ażābahū aḥad(un).

So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

Ayah 26

وَّلَا يُوْثِقُ وَثَاقَهٗٓ اَحَدٌ ۗ

Wa lā yūṡiqu waṡāqahū aḥad(un).

And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

Ayah 27

يٰٓاَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَىِٕنَّةُۙ

Yā ayyatuhan-nafsul-muṭma'innah(tu).

[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,

Ayah 28

ارْجِعِيْٓ اِلٰى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً ۚ

Irji‘ī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatam marḍiyyah(tan).

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

Ayah 29

فَادْخُلِيْ فِيْ عِبٰدِيْۙ

Fadkhuli fī ‘ibādī.

And enter among My [righteous] servants

Ayah 30

وَادْخُلِيْ جَنَّتِيْ ࣖࣖ

Wadkhulī jannatī.

And enter My Paradise."
