ONE AYAT A DAY

Surah Al-Hijr — The Rocky Tract

Surah 15 · 99 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

Alif lām rā, tilka āyātul-kitābi wa qur'ānim mubīn(in).

Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

Ayah 2

Rubamā yawaddul-lażīna kafarū lau kānū muslimīn(a).

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.

Ayah 3

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

Ayah 4

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

Ayah 5

Mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wa mā yasta'khirūn(a).

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

Ayah 6

Wa qālū yā ayyuhal-lażī nuzzila ‘alaihiż-żikru innaka lamajnūn(un).

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.

Ayah 7

Lau mā ta'tīnā bil-malā'ikati in kunta minaṣ-ṣādiqīn(a).

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

Ayah 8

Mā nunazzilul-malā'ikata illā bil-ḥaqqi wa mā kānū iżam munẓarīn(a).

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.

Ayah 9

Innā naḥnu nazzalnaż-żikra wa innā lahū laḥāfiẓūn(a).

Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.

Ayah 10

Wa laqad arsalnā min qablika fī syiya‘il-awwalīn(a).

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

Ayah 11

Wa mā ya'tīhim mir rasūlin illā kānū bihī yastahzi'ūn(a).

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

Ayah 12

Każālika naslukuhū fī qulūbil-mujrimīn(a).

Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.

Ayah 13

Lā yu'minūna bihī wa qad khalat sunnatul-awwalīn(a).

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

Ayah 14

Wa lau fataḥnā ‘alaihim bābam minas-samā'i fa ẓallū fīhi ya‘rujūn(a).

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

Ayah 15

Laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qaumum masḥūrūn(a).

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

Ayah 16

Wa laqad ja‘alnā fis-samā'i burūjaw wa zayyannāhā lin-nāẓirīn(a).

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

Ayah 17

Wa ḥafiẓnāhā min kulli syaiṭānir rajīm(in).

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]

Ayah 18

Illā manistaraqas-sam‘a fa atba‘ahū syihābum mubīn(un).

Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

Ayah 19

Wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa alqainā fīhā rawāsiya wa ambatnā fīhā min kulli syai'im mauzūn(in).

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

Ayah 20

Wa ja‘alnā lakum fīhā ma‘āyisya wa mal lastum lahū birāziqīn(a).

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

Ayah 21

Wa im min syai'in illā ‘indanā khazā'inuhū wa mā nunazziluhū illā biqadarim ma‘lūm(un).

And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.

Ayah 22

Wa arsalnar-riyāḥa lawāqiha fa anzalnā minas-samā'i mā'an fa asqainākumūh(u), wa mā antum lahū bikhāzinīn(a).

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

Ayah 23

Wa innā lanaḥnu nuḥyī wa numītu wa naḥnul-wāriṡūn(a).

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

Ayah 24

Wa laqad ‘alimnal-mustaqdimīna minkum wa laqad ‘alimnal-musta'khirīn(a).

And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

Ayah 25

Wa inna rabbaka huwa yaḥsyuruhum, innahū ḥakīmun ‘alīm(un).

And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

Ayah 26

Wa laqad khalaqnal-insāna min ṣalṣālim min ḥama'im masnūn(in).

And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

Ayah 27

Wal-jānna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāris-samūm(i).

And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

Ayah 28

Wa iż qāla rabbuka lil-malā'ikati innī khāliqum basyaram min ṣalṣālim min ḥama'im masnūn(in).

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.

Ayah 29

Fa iżā sawwaituhū wa nafakhtu fīhi mir rūḥī fa qa‘ū lahū sājidīn(a).

And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."

Ayah 30

Fa sajadal-malā'ikatu kulluhum ajma‘ūn(a).

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

Ayah 31

Illā iblīs(a), abā ay yakūna ma‘as-sājidīn(a).

Except Iblees; he refused to be with those who prostrated.

Ayah 32

Qāla lam akul li'asjuda libasyarin khalaqtahū min ṣalṣālim min ḥama'im masnūn(in).

Ayah 34

Qāla fakhruj minhā fa innaka rajīm(un).

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

Ayah 80

Wa mā khalaqnas-samāwāti wal-arḍa wa mā bainahumā illā bil-ḥaqq(i), wa innas-sā‘ata la'ātiyatun faṣfaḥiṣ-ṣafḥal-jamīl(a).

And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’ān.

Ayah 88

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].
