Surah Al-Mursalat — The Emissaries

وَالْمُرْسَلٰتِ عُرْفًاۙ

Wal-mursalāti ‘urfā(n).

By those [winds] sent forth in gusts

فَالْعٰصِفٰتِ عَصْفًاۙ

Fal-‘āṣifāti ‘aṣfā(n).

And the winds that blow violently

وَّالنّٰشِرٰتِ نَشْرًاۙ

Wan-nāsyirāti nasyrā(n).

And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]

فَالْفٰرِقٰتِ فَرْقًاۙ

Fal-fāriqāti farqā(n).

And those [angels] who bring criterion

فَالْمُلْقِيٰتِ ذِكْرًاۙ

Fal-mulqiyāti żikrā(n).

And those [angels] who deliver a message.

عُذْرًا اَوْ نُذْرًاۙ

‘Użran au nużrā(n).

As justification or warning,

اِنَّمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ لَوَاقِعٌۗ

Innamā tū‘adūna lawāqi‘(un).

Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.

فَاِذَا النُّجُوْمُ طُمِسَتْۙ

Fa iżan-nujūmu ṭumisat.

So when the stars are obliterated

وَاِذَا السَّمَاۤءُ فُرِجَتْۙ

Wa iżas-samā'u furijat.

And when the heaven is opened

وَاِذَا الْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْۙ

Wa iżal-jibālu nusifat.

And when the mountains are blown away

وَاِذَا الرُّسُلُ اُقِّتَتْۗ

Wa iżar-rusulu uqqitat.

And when the messengers' time has come...

لِاَيِّ يَوْمٍ اُجِّلَتْۗ

Li'ayyi yaumin ujjilat.

For what Day was it postponed?

لِيَوْمِ الْفَصْلِۚ

Liyaumil-faṣl(i).

For the Day of Judgement.

وَمَآ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِۗ

Wa mā adrāka mā yaumul-faṣl(i).

And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

اَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الْاَوَّلِيْنَۗ

Alam nuhlikil-awwalīn(a).

Did We not destroy the former peoples?

ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ الْاٰخِرِيْنَ

Ṡumma nutbi‘uhumul-ākhirīn(a).

Then We will follow them with the later ones.

كَذٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِيْنَ

Każālika naf‘alu bil-mujrimīn(a).

Thus do We deal with the criminals.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

اَلَمْ نَخْلُقْكُّمْ مِّنْ مَّاۤءٍ مَّهِيْنٍۙ

Alam nakhluqkum mim mā'im mahīn(in).

Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?

فَجَعَلْنٰهُ فِيْ قَرَارٍ مَّكِيْنٍ

Fa ja‘alnāhu fī qarārim makīn(in).

And We placed it in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb]

اِلٰى قَدَرٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍۙ

Ilā qadarim ma‘lūm(in).

For a known extent.

فَقَدَرْنَاۖ فَنِعْمَ الْقٰدِرُوْنَ

Fa qadarnā, fani‘mal-qādirūn(a).

And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

اَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْاَرْضَ كِفَاتًاۙ

Alam naj‘alil-arḍa kifātā(n).

Have We not made the earth a container

اَحْيَاۤءً وَّاَمْوَاتًاۙ

Aḥyā'aw wa amwātā(n).

Of the living and the dead?

وَّجَعَلْنَا فِيْهَا رَوَاسِيَ شٰمِخٰتٍ وَّاَسْقَيْنٰكُمْ مَّاۤءً فُرَاتًاۗ

Wa ja‘alnā fīhā rawāsiya syāmikhātiw wa asqainākum mā'an furātā(n).

And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

اِنْطَلِقُوْٓا اِلٰى مَا كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوْنَۚ

Inṭaliqū ilā mā kuntum bihī tukażżibūn(a).

[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.

اِنْطَلِقُوْٓا اِلٰى ظِلٍّ ذِيْ ثَلٰثِ شُعَبٍ

Inṭaliqū ilā ẓillin żī ṡalāṡi syu‘ab(in).

Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns.

لَا ظَلِيْلٍ وَّلَا يُغْنِيْ مِنَ اللَّهَبِۗ

Lā ẓalīliw wa lā yugnī minal-lahab(i).

[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."

اِنَّهَا تَرْمِيْ بِشَرَرٍ كَالْقَصْرِۚ

Innahā tarmī bisyararin kal-qaṣr(i).

Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,

كَاَنَّهٗ جِمٰلَتٌ صُفْرٌۗ

Ka'annahū jimālatun ṣufr(un).

As if they were yellowish [black] camels.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

هٰذَا يَوْمُ لَا يَنْطِقُوْنَۙ

Hāżā yaumu lā yanṭiqūn(a).

This is a Day they will not speak,

وَلَا يُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَيَعْتَذِرُوْنَ

Wa lā yu'żanu lahum fa ya‘tażirūn(a).

Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

هٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ جَمَعْنٰكُمْ وَالْاَوَّلِيْنَ

Hāżā yaumul-faṣli jama‘nākum wal-awwalīn(a).

This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.

فَاِنْ كَانَ لَكُمْ كَيْدٌ فَكِيْدُوْنِ

Fa'in kāna lakum kaidun fakīdūn(i).

So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ ࣖ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِيْنَ فِيْ ظِلٰلٍ وَّعُيُوْنٍۙ

Innal-muttaqīna fī ẓilāliw wa ‘uyūn(in).

Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs

وَّفَوَاكِهَ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُوْنَۗ

Wa fawākiha mimmā yasytahūn(a).

And fruits from whatever they desire,

كُلُوْا وَاشْرَبُوْا هَنِيْۤـًٔا ۢبِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ

Kulū wasyrabū hanī'am bimā kuntum ta‘malūn(a).

[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."

اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِى الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ

Innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn(a).

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

كُلُوْا وَتَمَتَّعُوْا قَلِيْلًا اِنَّكُمْ مُّجْرِمُوْنَ

Kulū wa tamatta‘ū qalīlan innakum mujrimūn(a).

[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمُ ارْكَعُوْا لَا يَرْكَعُوْنَ

Wa iżā qīla lahumurka‘ū lā yarka‘ūn(a).

And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ

Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

فَبِاَيِّ حَدِيْثٍۢ بَعْدَهٗ يُؤْمِنُوْنَ ࣖ ۔

Fa bi'ayyi ḥadīṡim ba‘dahū yu'minūn(a).

Then in what statement after it [i.e., the Qur’ān] will they believe?
