Surah Az-Zariyat — The Winnowing Winds

Surah 51 · 60 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

وَالذّٰرِيٰتِ ذَرْوًاۙ

Waż-żāriyāti żarwā(n).

By the [winds] scattering [dust], dispersing [it]

Ayah 2

فَالْحٰمِلٰتِ وِقْرًاۙ

Fal-ḥāmilāti wiqrā(n).

And the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]

Ayah 3

فَالْجٰرِيٰتِ يُسْرًاۙ

Fal-jāriyāti yusrā(n).

And the ships sailing with ease

Ayah 4

فَالْمُقَسِّمٰتِ اَمْرًاۙ

Fal-muqassimāti amrā(n).

And the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,

Ayah 5

اِنَّمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ لَصَادِقٌۙ

Innamā tū‘adūna laṣādiq(un).

Indeed, what you are promised is true.

Ayah 6

وَّاِنَّ الدِّيْنَ لَوَاقِعٌۗ

Wa innad-dīna lawāqi‘(un).

And indeed, the recompense is to occur.

Ayah 7

وَالسَّمَاۤءِ ذَاتِ الْحُبُكِۙ

Was-samā'i żātil-ḥubuk(i).

By the heaven containing pathways,

Ayah 8

اِنَّكُمْ لَفِيْ قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍۙ

Innakum lafī qaulim mukhtalif(in).

Indeed, you are in differing speech.

Ayah 9

يُّؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ اُفِكَۗ

Yu'faku ‘anhu man ufik(a).

Deluded away from it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is he who is deluded.

Ayah 10

قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُوْنَۙ

Qutilal-kharrāṣūn(a).

Destroyed are the misinformers

Ayah 11

الَّذِيْنَ هُمْ فِيْ غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُوْنَۙ

Allażīna hum fī gamratin sāhūn(a).

Who are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.

Ayah 12

يَسْـَٔلُوْنَ اَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الدِّيْنِۗ

Yas'alūna ayyāna yaumud-dīn(i).

They ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"

Ayah 13

يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى النَّارِ يُفْتَنُوْنَ

Yauma hum ‘alan-nāri yuftanūn(a).

[It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire.

Ayah 14

ذُوْقُوْا فِتْنَتَكُمْۗ هٰذَا الَّذِيْ كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَ

Żūqū fitnatakum, hāżal-lażī kuntum bihī tasta‘jilūn(a).

[And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."

Ayah 15

اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِيْنَ فِيْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُيُوْنٍۙ

Innal-muttaqīna fī jannātiw wa ‘uyūn(in).

Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs,

Ayah 16

اٰخِذِيْنَ مَآ اٰتٰىهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۗ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِيْنَۗ

Ākhiżīna mā ātāhum rabbuhum, innahum kānū qabla żālika muḥsinīn(a).

Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good.

Ayah 17

كَانُوْا قَلِيْلًا مِّنَ الَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُوْنَ

Kānū qalīlam minal-laili mā yahja‘ūn(a).

They used to sleep but little of the night,

Ayah 18

وَبِالْاَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوْنَ

Wa bil-asḥāri hum yastagfirūn(a).

And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,

Ayah 19

وَفِيْٓ اَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّاۤىِٕلِ وَالْمَحْرُوْمِ

Wa fī amwālihim ḥaqqul lis-sā'ili wal-maḥrūm(i).

And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.

Ayah 20

وَفِى الْاَرْضِ اٰيٰتٌ لِّلْمُوْقِنِيْنَۙ

Wa fil-arḍi āyātul lil-mūqinīn(a).

And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]

Ayah 21

وَفِيْٓ اَنْفُسِكُمْ ۗ اَفَلَا تُبْصِرُوْنَ

Wa fī anfusikum, afalā tubṣirūn(a).

And in yourselves. Then will you not see?

Ayah 22

وَفِى السَّمَاۤءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ

Wa fis-samā'i rizqukum wa mā tū‘adūn(a).

And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.

Ayah 23

فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَاۤءِ وَالْاَرْضِ اِنَّهٗ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ اَنَّكُمْ تَنْطِقُوْنَ ࣖ

Fa wa rabbis-samā'i wal-arḍi innahū laḥaqqum miṡla mā annakum tanṭiqūn(a).

Then by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.

Ayah 24

هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيْثُ ضَيْفِ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ الْمُكْرَمِيْنَۘ

Hal atāka ḥadīṡu ḍaifi ibrāhīmal-mukramīn(a).

Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham? -

Ayah 25

اِذْ دَخَلُوْا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوْا سَلٰمًا ۗقَالَ سَلٰمٌۚ قَوْمٌ مُّنْكَرُوْنَ

Iż dakhalū ‘alaihi fa qālū salāmā(n), qāla salām(un), qaumum munkarūn(a).

When they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace; [you are] a people unknown."

Ayah 26

فَرَاغَ اِلٰٓى اَهْلِهٖ فَجَاۤءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِيْنٍۙ

Farāga ilā ahlihī fa jā'a bi‘ijlin samīn(in).

Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.

Ayah 27

فَقَرَّبَهٗٓ اِلَيْهِمْۚ قَالَ اَلَا تَأْكُلُوْنَ

Fa qarrabahū ilaihim, qāla alā ta'kulūn(a).

And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"

Ayah 28

فَاَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيْفَةً ۗقَالُوْا لَا تَخَفْۗ وَبَشَّرُوْهُ بِغُلٰمٍ عَلِيْمٍ

Fa aujasa minhum khīfah(tan), qālū lā takhaf, wa basysyarūhu bigulāmin ‘alīm(in).

And he felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.

Ayah 29

فَاَقْبَلَتِ امْرَاَتُهٗ فِيْ صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوْزٌ عَقِيْمٌ

Fa aqbalatimra'atuhū fī ṣarratin fa ṣakkat wajhahā wa qālat ‘ajūzun ‘aqīm(un).

And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"

Ayah 30

قَالُوْا كَذٰلِكِۙ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۗاِنَّهٗ هُوَ الْحَكِيْمُ الْعَلِيْمُ ۔

Qālū każālik(i), qāla rabbuk(i), innahū huwal-ḥakīmul-‘alīm(u).

They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."

Ayah 31

۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ اَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُوْنَۚ

Qāla famā khaṭbukum ayyuhal-mursalūn(a).

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

Ayah 32

قَالُوْآ اِنَّآ اُرْسِلْنَآ اِلٰى قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِيْنَۙ

Qālū innā ursilnā ilā qaumim mujrimīn(a).

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals

Ayah 33

لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّنْ طِيْنٍۙ

Linursila ‘alaihim ḥijāratam min ṭīn(in).

To send down upon them stones of clay,

Ayah 34

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِيْنَ

Musawwamatan ‘inda rabbika lil-musrifīn(a).

Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."

Ayah 35

فَاَخْرَجْنَا مَنْ كَانَ فِيْهَا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَۚ

Fa akhrajnā man kāna fīhā minal-mu'minīn(a).

So We brought out whoever was in them [i.e., the cities] of the believers.

Ayah 36

فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيْهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَۚ

Famā wajadnā fīhā gaira baitim minal-muslimīn(a).

And We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.

Ayah 37

وَتَرَكْنَا فِيْهَآ اٰيَةً لِّلَّذِيْنَ يَخَافُوْنَ الْعَذَابَ الْاَلِيْمَۗ

Wa taraknā fīhā āyatal lil-lażīna yakhāfūnal-‘ażābal-alīm(a).

And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

Ayah 38

وَفِيْ مُوْسٰىٓ اِذْ اَرْسَلْنٰهُ اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطٰنٍ مُّبِيْنٍ

Wa fī mūsā iż arsalnāhu ilā fir‘auna bisulṭānim mubīn(in).

And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.

Ayah 39

فَتَوَلّٰى بِرُكْنِهٖ وَقَالَ سٰحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ

Fa tawallā biruknihī wa qāla sāḥirun au majnūn(un).

But he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman."

Ayah 40

فَاَخَذْنٰهُ وَجُنُوْدَهٗ فَنَبَذْنٰهُمْ فِى الْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيْمٌۗ

Fa akhażnāhu wa junūdahū fanabażnāhum fil-yammi wa huwa mulīm(un).

So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.

Ayah 41

وَفِيْ عَادٍ اِذْ اَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الرِّيْحَ الْعَقِيْمَۚ

Wa fī ‘ādin iż arsalnā ‘alaihimur-rīḥal-‘aqīm(a).

And in ʿAad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.

Ayah 42

مَا تَذَرُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ اَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ اِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِيْمِۗ

Mā tażaru min syai'in atat ‘alaihi illā ja‘alathu kar-ramīm(i).

It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.

Ayah 43

وَفِيْ ثَمُوْدَ اِذْ قِيْلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوْا حَتّٰى حِيْنٍ

Wa fī ṡamūda iż qīla lahum tamatta‘ū ḥattā ḥīn(in).

And in Thamūd, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."

Ayah 44

فَعَتَوْا عَنْ اَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصّٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُوْنَ

Fa‘atau ‘an amri rabbihim fa akhażathumuṣ-ṣā‘iqatu wa hum yanẓurūn(a).

But they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.

Ayah 45

فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوْا مِنْ قِيَامٍ وَّمَا كَانُوْا مُنْتَصِرِيْنَۙ

Famastaṭā‘ū min qiyāmiw wa mā kānū muntaṣirīn(a).

And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.

Ayah 46

وَقَوْمَ نُوْحٍ مِّنْ قَبْلُ ۗ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَوْمًا فٰسِقِيْنَ ࣖ

Wa qauma nūḥim min qabl(u), innahum kānū qauman fāsiqīn(a).

And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient.

Ayah 47

وَالسَّمَاۤءَ بَنَيْنٰهَا بِاَيْىدٍ وَّاِنَّا لَمُوْسِعُوْنَ

Was-samā'a banaināhā bi'aidiw wa innā lamūsi‘ūn(a).

And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.

Ayah 48

وَالْاَرْضَ فَرَشْنٰهَا فَنِعْمَ الْمٰهِدُوْنَ

Wal-arḍa farasynāhā fa ni‘mal-māhidūn(a).

And the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer.

Ayah 49

وَمِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُوْنَ

Wa min kulli syai'in khalaqnā zaujaini la‘allakum tażakkarūn(a).

And of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.

Ayah 50

فَفِرُّوْٓا اِلَى اللّٰهِ ۗاِنِّيْ لَكُمْ مِّنْهُ نَذِيْرٌ مُّبِيْنٌۚ

Fa firrū ilallāh(i), innī lakum minhu nażīrum mubīn(un).

So flee to Allāh. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

Ayah 51

وَلَا تَجْعَلُوْا مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَۗ اِنِّيْ لَكُمْ مِّنْهُ نَذِيْرٌ مُّبِيْنٌ

Wa lā taj‘alū ma‘allāhi ilāhan ākhar(a), innī lakum minhu nażīrum mubīn(un).

And do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

Ayah 52

كَذٰلِكَ مَآ اَتَى الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِّنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا قَالُوْا سَاحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ

Każālika mā atal-lażīna min qablihim mir rasūlin illā qālū sāḥirun au majnūn(un).

Similarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman."

Ayah 53

اَتَوَاصَوْا بِهٖۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُوْنَۚ

Atawāṣau bih(ī), bal hum qaumun ṭāgūn(a).

Did they suggest it to them? Rather, they [themselves] are a transgressing people.

Ayah 54

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ اَنْتَ بِمَلُوْمٍ

Fa tawalla ‘anhum famā anta bimalūm(in).

So leave them, [O Muḥammad], for you are not to be blamed.

Ayah 55

وَذَكِّرْ فَاِنَّ الذِّكْرٰى تَنْفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

Wa żakkir fa innaż-żikra tanfa‘ul-mu'minīn(a).

And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.

Ayah 56

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْاِنْسَ اِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوْنِ

Wa mā khalaqtul-jinna wal-insa illā liya‘budūn(i).

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

Ayah 57

مَآ اُرِيْدُ مِنْهُمْ مِّنْ رِّزْقٍ وَّمَآ اُرِيْدُ اَنْ يُّطْعِمُوْنِ

Mā urīdu minhum mir rizqiw wa mā urīdu ay yuṭ‘imūn(i).

I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

Ayah 58

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِيْنُ

Innallāha huwar-razzāqu żul-quwwatil-matīn(u).

Indeed, it is Allāh who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.

Ayah 59

فَاِنَّ لِلَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا ذَنُوْبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوْبِ اَصْحٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُوْنِ

Fa inna lil-lażīna ẓalamū żanūbam miṡla żanūbi aṣḥābihim falā yasta‘jilūn(i).

And indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their companions [i.e., predecessors], so let them not impatiently urge Me.

Ayah 60

فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا مِنْ يَّوْمِهِمُ الَّذِيْ يُوْعَدُوْنَ ࣖ

Fa wailul lil-lażīna kafarū miy yaumihimul-lażī yū‘adūn(a).

And woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised.
