Surah Al-Insyiqaq — The Sundering

Surah 84 · 25 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

اِذَا السَّمَاۤءُ انْشَقَّتْۙ

Iżas-samā'unsyaqqat.

When the sky has split [open]

Ayah 2

وَاَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْۙ

Wa ażinat lirabbihā wa ḥuqqat.

And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]

Ayah 3

وَاِذَا الْاَرْضُ مُدَّتْۙ

Wa iẓal-arḍu muddat.

And when the earth has been extended

Ayah 4

وَاَلْقَتْ مَا فِيْهَا وَتَخَلَّتْۙ

Wa alqat mā fīhā wa takhallat.

And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it].

Ayah 5

وَاَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْۗ

Wa ażinat lirabbihā wa ḥuqqat.

And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] -

Ayah 6

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الْاِنْسَانُ اِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلٰقِيْهِۚ

Yā ayyuhal-insānu innaka kādiḥun ilā rabbika kadḥan fa mulāqīh(i).

O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.

Ayah 7

فَاَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِيَمِيْنِهٖۙ

Fa ammā man ūtiya kitābahū biyamīnih(ī).

Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,

Ayah 8

فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَّسِيْرًاۙ

Fa saufa yuḥāsabu ḥisābay yasīrā(n).

He will be judged with an easy account

Ayah 9

وَّيَنْقَلِبُ اِلٰٓى اَهْلِهٖ مَسْرُوْرًاۗ

Wa yanqalibu ilā ahlihī masrūrā(n).

And return to his people in happiness.

Ayah 10

وَاَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ وَرَاۤءَ ظَهْرِهٖۙ

Wa ammā man ūtiya kitābahū warā'a ẓahrih(ī).

But as for he who is given his record behind his back,

Ayah 11

فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوْا ثُبُوْرًاۙ

Fa saufa yad‘ū ṡubūrā(n).

He will cry out for destruction

Ayah 12

وَّيَصْلٰى سَعِيْرًاۗ

Wa yaṣlā sa‘īrā(n).

And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.

Ayah 13

اِنَّهٗ كَانَ فِيْٓ اَهْلِهٖ مَسْرُوْرًاۗ

Innahū kāna fī ahlihī masrūrā(n).

Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;

Ayah 14

اِنَّهٗ ظَنَّ اَنْ لَّنْ يَّحُوْرَ ۛ

Innahū ẓanna allay yaḥūr(a).

Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allāh].

Ayah 15

بَلٰىۛ اِنَّ رَبَّهٗ كَانَ بِهٖ بَصِيْرًاۗ

Balā, inna rabbahū kāna bihī baṣīrā(n).

But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.

Ayah 16

فَلَآ اُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِۙ

Falā uqsimu bisy-syafaq(i).

So I swear by the twilight glow

Ayah 17

وَالَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَۙ

Wal-laili wa mā wasaq(a).

And [by] the night and what it envelops

Ayah 18

وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا اتَّسَقَۙ

Wal-qamari iżattasaq(a).

And [by] the moon when it becomes full

Ayah 19

لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَنْ طَبَقٍۗ

Latarkabunna ṭabaqan ‘an ṭabaq(in).

[That] you will surely embark upon [i.e., experience] state after state.

Ayah 20

فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَۙ

Famā lahum lā yu'minūn(a).

So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,

Ayah 21

وَاِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْاٰنُ لَا يَسْجُدُوْنَ ۗ ۩

Wa iżā quri'a ‘alaihimul-qur'ānu lā yasjudūn(a).

And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allāh]?

Ayah 22

بَلِ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا يُكَذِّبُوْنَۖ

Balil-lażīna kafarū yukażżibūn(a).

But those who have disbelieved deny,

Ayah 23

وَاللّٰهُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوْعُوْنَۖ

Wallāhu a‘lamu bimā yū‘ūn(a).

And Allāh is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.

Ayah 24

فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ اَلِيْمٍۙ

Fa basysyirhum bi‘ażābin alīm(in).

So give them tidings of a painful punishment,

Ayah 25

اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمْ اَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُوْنٍ ࣖ

Illal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum ajrun gairu mamnūn(in).

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
