ONE AYAT A DAY

Surah Al-Buruj — The Mansions of the Stars

Surah 85 · 22 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

وَالسَّمَاۤءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوْجِۙ

Was-samā'i żātil-burūj(i).

By the sky containing great stars

Ayah 2

وَالْيَوْمِ الْمَوْعُوْدِۙ

Wal-yaumil-mau‘ūd(i).

And [by] the promised Day

Ayah 3

وَشَاهِدٍ وَّمَشْهُوْدٍۗ

Wa syāhidiw wa masyhūd(in).

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

Ayah 4

قُتِلَ اَصْحٰبُ الْاُخْدُوْدِۙ

Qutila aṣḥābul-ukhdūd(i).

Destroyed [i.e., cursed] were the companions of the trench

Ayah 5

النَّارِ ذَاتِ الْوَقُوْدِۙ

An-nāri żātil-waqūd(i).

[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

Ayah 6

اِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُوْدٌۙ

Iż hum ‘alaihā qu‘ūd(un).

When they were sitting near it.

Ayah 7

وَّهُمْ عَلٰى مَا يَفْعَلُوْنَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ شُهُوْدٌ ۗ

Wa hum ‘alā mā yaf‘alūna bil-mu'minīna syuhūd(un).

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

Ayah 8

وَمَا نَقَمُوْا مِنْهُمْ اِلَّآ اَنْ يُّؤْمِنُوْا بِاللّٰهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْحَمِيْدِۙ

Wa mā naqamū minhum illā ay yu'minū billāhil-‘azīzil-ḥamīd(i).

And they resented them not except because they believed in Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

Ayah 9

الَّذِيْ لَهٗ مُلْكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ ۗوَاللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيْدٌ ۗ

Allażī lahū mulkus-samāwāti wal-arḍ(i), wallāhu ‘alā kulli syai'in syahīd(un).

To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, over all things, is Witness.

Ayah 10

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوْبُوْا فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَرِيْقِۗ

Innal-lażīna fatanul-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti ṡumma lam yatūbū fa lahum ‘ażābu jahannama wa lahum ‘ażābul-ḥarīq(i).

Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

Ayah 11

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنّٰتٌ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهٰرُ ەۗ ذٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْكَبِيْرُۗ

Innal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum jannātun tajrī min taḥtihal-anhār(u), żālikal-fauzul-kabīr(u).

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

Ayah 12

اِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيْدٌ ۗ

Inna baṭsya rabbika lasyadīd(un).

Indeed, the assault [i.e., vengeance] of your Lord is severe.

Ayah 13

اِنَّهٗ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيْدُۚ

Innahū huwa yubdi'u wa yu‘īd(u).

Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.

Ayah 14

وَهُوَ الْغَفُوْرُ الْوَدُوْدُۙ

Wa huwal-gafūrul-wadūd(u).

And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,

Ayah 15

ذُو الْعَرْشِ الْمَجِيْدُۙ

Żul-‘arsyil-majīd(i).

Honorable Owner of the Throne,

Ayah 16

فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيْدُۗ

Fa‘‘ālul limā yurīd(u).

Effecter of what He intends.

Ayah 17

هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيْثُ الْجُنُوْدِۙ

Hal atāka ḥadīṡul-junūd(i).

Has there reached you the story of the soldiers -

Ayah 18

فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُوْدَۗ

Fir‘auna wa ṡamūd(a).

[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamūd?

Ayah 19

بَلِ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا فِيْ تَكْذِيْبٍۙ

Balil-lażīna kafarū fī takżīb(in).

But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,

Ayah 20

وَّاللّٰهُ مِنْ وَّرَاۤىِٕهِمْ مُّحِيْطٌۚ

Wallāhu miw warā'ihim muḥīṭ(un).

While Allāh encompasses them from behind.

Ayah 21

بَلْ هُوَ قُرْاٰنٌ مَّجِيْدٌۙ

Bal huwa qur'ānum majīd(un).

But this is an honored Qur’ān

Ayah 22

فِيْ لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوْظٍ ࣖ

Fī lauḥim maḥfūẓ(in).

[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate.
