Surah At-Tariq — The Nightcomer

Surah 86 · 17 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

وَالسَّمَاۤءِ وَالطَّارِقِۙ

Was-samā'i waṭ-ṭāriq(i).

By the sky and the night comer

Ayah 2

وَمَآ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الطَّارِقُۙ

Wa mā adrāka maṭ-ṭāriq(u).

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

Ayah 3

النَّجْمُ الثَّاقِبُۙ

An-najmuṡ-ṡāqib(u).

It is the piercing star

Ayah 4

اِنْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌۗ

In kullu nafsil lammā ‘alaihā ḥāfiẓ(un).

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

Ayah 5

فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْاِنْسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ

Falyanẓuril-insānu mimma khuliq(a).

So let man observe from what he was created.

Ayah 6

خُلِقَ مِنْ مَّاۤءٍ دَافِقٍۙ

Khuliqa mim mā'in dāfiq(in).

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

Ayah 7

يَّخْرُجُ مِنْۢ بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَاۤىِٕبِۗ

Yakhruju mim bainiṣ-ṣulbi wat-tarā'ib(i).

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

Ayah 8

اِنَّهٗ عَلٰى رَجْعِهٖ لَقَادِرٌۗ

Innahū ‘alā raj‘ihī laqādir(un).

Indeed, He [i.e., Allāh], to return him [to life], is Able.

Ayah 9

يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَاۤىِٕرُۙ

Yauma tublas-sarā'ir(u).

The Day when secrets will be put on trial,

Ayah 10

فَمَا لَهٗ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ وَّلَا نَاصِرٍۗ

Famā lahū min quwwatiw wa lā nāṣir(in).

Then he [i.e., man] will have no power or any helper.

Ayah 11

وَالسَّمَاۤءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجْعِۙ

Was-samā'i żātir-raj‘(i).

By the sky which sends back

Ayah 12

وَالْاَرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِۙ

Wal-arḍi żātiṣ-ṣad‘(i).

And [by] the earth which splits,

Ayah 13

اِنَّهٗ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌۙ

Innahū laqaulun faṣl(un).

Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a decisive statement,

Ayah 14

وَّمَا هُوَ بِالْهَزْلِۗ

Wa mā huwa bil-hazl(i).

And it is not amusement.

Ayah 15

اِنَّهُمْ يَكِيْدُوْنَ كَيْدًاۙ

Innahum yakīdūna kaidā(n).

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

Ayah 16

وَّاَكِيْدُ كَيْدًاۖ

Wa akīdu kaidā(n).

But I am planning a plan.

Ayah 17

فَمَهِّلِ الْكٰفِرِيْنَ اَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًا ࣖ

Fa mahhilil-kāfirīna amhilhum ruwaidā(n).

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
