ONE AYAT A DAY

Surah Al-Muddassir — The Cloaked One

Surah 74 · 56 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُۙ

Yā ayyuhal-muddaṡṡir(u).

O you who covers himself [with a garment],

Ayah 2

قُمْ فَاَنْذِرْۖ

Qum fa'anżir.

Arise and warn.

Ayah 3

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْۖ

Wa rabbaka fakabbir.

And your Lord glorify.

Ayah 4

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْۖ

Wa ṡiyābaka faṭahhir.

And your clothing purify.

Ayah 5

وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْۖ

War-rujza fahjur.

And uncleanliness avoid.

Ayah 6

وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُۖ

Wa lā tamnun tastakṡir(u).

And do not confer favor to acquire more.

Ayah 7

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْۗ

Wa lirabbika faṣbir.

But for your Lord be patient.

Ayah 8

فَاِذَا نُقِرَ فِى النَّاقُوْرِۙ

Fa iżā nuqira fin-nāqūr(i).

And when the trumpet is blown,

Ayah 9

فَذٰلِكَ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ يَّوْمٌ عَسِيْرٌۙ

Fa żālika yauma'iżiy yaumun ‘asīr(un).

That Day will be a difficult day

Ayah 10

عَلَى الْكٰفِرِيْنَ غَيْرُ يَسِيْرٍ

‘Alal-kāfirīna gairu yasīr(in).

For the disbelievers - not easy.

Ayah 11

ذَرْنِيْ وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيْدًاۙ

Żarnī wa man khalaqtu waḥīdā(n).

Leave Me with the one I created alone

Ayah 12

وَّجَعَلْتُ لَهٗ مَالًا مَّمْدُوْدًاۙ

Wa ja‘altu lahū mālam mamdūdā(n).

And to whom I granted extensive wealth

Ayah 13

وَّبَنِيْنَ شُهُوْدًاۙ

Wa banīna syuhūdā(n).

And children present [with him]

Ayah 14

وَّمَهَّدْتُّ لَهٗ تَمْهِيْدًاۙ

Wa mahhattu lahū tamhīdā(n).

And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

Ayah 15

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ اَنْ اَزِيْدَۙ

Ṡumma yaṭma‘u an azīd(a).

Then he desires that I should add more.

Ayah 16

كَلَّاۗ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ لِاٰيٰتِنَا عَنِيْدًاۗ

Kallā, innahū kāna li'āyātinā ‘anīdā(n).

No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

Ayah 17

سَاُرْهِقُهٗ صَعُوْدًاۗ

Sa'urhiquhū ṣa‘ūdā(n).

I will cover him with arduous torment.

Ayah 18

اِنَّهٗ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَۙ

Innahū fakkara wa qaddar(a).

Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

Ayah 19

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَۙ

Faqutila kaifa qaddar(a).

So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

Ayah 20

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَۙ

Ṡumma qutila kaifa qaddar(a).

Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

Ayah 21

ثُمَّ نَظَرَۙ

Ṡumma naẓar(a).

Then he considered [again];

Ayah 22

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَۙ

Ṡumma ‘abasa wa basar(a).

Then he frowned and scowled;

Ayah 23

ثُمَّ اَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَۙ

Ṡumma adbara wastakbar(a).

Then he turned back and was arrogant

Ayah 24

فَقَالَ اِنْ هٰذَآ اِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُّؤْثَرُۙ

Faqāla in hāżā illā siḥruy yu'ṡar(u).

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

Ayah 25

اِنْ هٰذَآ اِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِۗ

In hāżā illā qaulul-basyar(i).

This is not but the word of a human being."

Ayah 26

سَاُصْلِيْهِ سَقَرَ

Sa'uṣlīhi saqar(a).

I will drive him into Saqar.

Ayah 27

وَمَآ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا سَقَرُۗ

Wa mā adrāka mā saqar(a).

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

Ayah 28

لَا تُبْقِيْ وَلَا تَذَرُۚ

Lā tubqī wa lā tażar(u).

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

Ayah 29

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِۚ

Lawwāḥatul lil-basyar(i).

Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.

Ayah 30

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَۗ

‘Alaihā tis‘ata ‘asyar(a).

Over it are nineteen [angels].

Ayah 31

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ اَصْحٰبَ النَّارِ اِلَّا مَلٰۤىِٕكَةً ۖوَّمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ اِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْاۙ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْكِتٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْٓا اِيْمَانًا وَّلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْكِتٰبَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُوْنَۙ وَلِيَقُوْلَ الَّذِيْنَ فِيْ قُلُوْبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ وَّالْكٰفِرُوْنَ مَاذَآ اَرَادَ اللّٰهُ بِهٰذَا مَثَلًاۗ كَذٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللّٰهُ مَنْ يَّشَاۤءُ وَيَهْدِيْ مَنْ يَّشَاۤءُۗ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُوْدَ رَبِّكَ اِلَّا هُوَۗ وَمَا هِيَ اِلَّا ذِكْرٰى لِلْبَشَرِ ࣖ

Wa mā ja‘alnā aṣḥāban-nāri illā malā'ikah(tan), wa mā ja‘alnā ‘iddatahum illā fitnatal lil-lażīna kafarū, liyastaiqinal-lażīna ūtul-kitāba wa yazdādal-lażīna āmanū īmānaw wa lā yartābal-lażīna ūtul-kitāba wal-mu'minūn(a), wa liyaqūlal-lażīna fī qulūbihim maraḍuw wal-kāfirūna māżā arādallāhu bihāżā maṡalā(n), każālika yuḍillullāhu may yasyā'u wa yahdī may yasyā'(u), wa mā ya‘lamu junūda rabbika illā huw(a), wa mā hiya illā żikrā lil-basyar(i).

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.

Ayah 32

كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِۙ

Kallā wal-qamar(i).

No! By the moon.

Ayah 33

وَالَّيْلِ اِذْ اَدْبَرَۙ

Wal-laili iż adbar(a).

And [by] the night when it departs.

Ayah 34

وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَآ اَسْفَرَۙ

Waṣ-ṣubḥi iżā asfar(a).

And [by] the morning when it brightens,

Ayah 35

اِنَّهَا لَاِحْدَى الْكُبَرِۙ

Innahā la'iḥdal-kubar(i).

Indeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions].

Ayah 36

نَذِيْرًا لِّلْبَشَرِۙ

Nażīral lil-basyar(i).

As a warning to humanity -

Ayah 37

لِمَنْ شَاۤءَ مِنْكُمْ اَنْ يَّتَقَدَّمَ اَوْ يَتَاَخَّرَۗ

Liman syā'a minkum ay yataqaddama au yata'akhkhar(a).

To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.

Ayah 38

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِيْنَةٌۙ

Kullu nafsim bimā kasabat rahīnah(tun).

Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained.

Ayah 39

اِلَّآ اَصْحٰبَ الْيَمِيْنِ ۛ

Illā aṣḥābal-yamīn(i).

Except the companions of the right,.

Ayah 40

فِيْ جَنّٰتٍ ۛ يَتَسَاۤءَلُوْنَۙ

Fī jannātin - yatasā'alūn(a).

[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

Ayah 41

عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِيْنَۙ

‘Anil-mujrimīn(a).

About the criminals,

Ayah 42

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِيْ سَقَرَ

Mā salakakum fī saqar(a).

[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

Ayah 43

قَالُوْا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّيْنَۙ

Qālū lam naku minal-muṣallīn(a).

They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

Ayah 44

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِيْنَۙ

Wa lam naku nuṭ‘imul-miskīn(a).

Nor did we used to feed the poor.

Ayah 45

وَكُنَّا نَخُوْضُ مَعَ الْخَاۤىِٕضِيْنَۙ

Wa kunnā nakhūḍu ma‘al-khā'iḍīn(a).

And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

Ayah 46

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّيْنِۙ

Wa kunnā nukażżibu biyaumid-dīn(i).

And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

Ayah 47

حَتّٰىٓ اَتٰىنَا الْيَقِيْنُۗ

Ḥattā atānal-yaqīn(u).

Until there came to us the certainty [i.e., death]."

Ayah 48

فَمَا تَنْفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشّٰفِعِيْنَۗ

Famā tanfa‘uhum syafā‘atusy-syāfi‘īn(a).

So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

Ayah 49

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِيْنَۙ

Famā lahum ‘anit-tażkirati mu‘riḍīn(a).

Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away.

Ayah 50

كَاَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنْفِرَةٌۙ

Ka'annahum ḥumurum mustanfirah(tun).

As if they were alarmed donkeys.

Ayah 51

فَرَّتْ مِنْ قَسْوَرَةٍۗ

Farrat min qaswarah(tin).

Fleeing from a lion?

Ayah 52

بَلْ يُرِيْدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ اَنْ يُّؤْتٰى صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةًۙ

Bal yurīdu kullumri'im minhum ay yu'tā ṣuḥufam munasysyarah(tan).

Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.

Ayah 53

كَلَّاۗ بَلْ لَّا يَخَافُوْنَ الْاٰخِرَةَۗ

Kallā, bal lā yakhāfūnal-ākhirah(ta).

No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

Ayah 54

كَلَّآ اِنَّهٗ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۚ

Kallā innahū tażkirah(tun).

No! Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder.

Ayah 55

فَمَنْ شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهٗۗ

Faman syā'a żakarah(ū).

Then whoever wills will remember it.

Ayah 56

وَمَا يَذْكُرُوْنَ اِلَّآ اَنْ يَّشَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ ۗهُوَ اَهْلُ التَّقْوٰى وَاَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ ࣖ

Wa mā yażkurūna illā ay yasyā'allāh(u), huwa ahlut-taqwā wa ahlul-magfirah(ti).

And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
