ONE AYAT A DAY
Surah 75 · 40 ayahs · Meccan
Lā uqsimu biyaumil-qiyāmah(ti).
I swear by the Day of Resurrection
Wa lā uqsimu bin nafsil-lawwāmah(ti).
And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].
Ayaḥsabul-insānu allan najma‘a ‘iẓāmah(ū).
Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?
Balā qādirīna ‘alā an nusawwiya banānah(ū).
Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.
Bal yurīdul-insānu liyafjura amāmah(ū).
But man desires to continue in sin.
Yas'alu ayyāna yaumul-qiyāmah(ti).
He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
Fa iżā bariqal-baṣar(u).
So when vision is dazzled.
Wa khasafal-qamar(u).
And the moon darkens.
Wa jumi‘asy-syamsu wal-qamar(u).
And the sun and the moon are joined,
Yaqūlul-insānu yauma'iżin ainal-mafarr(u).
Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"
Kallā lā wazar(a).
No! There is no refuge.
Ilā rabbika yauma'iżinil-mustaqarr(u).
To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.
Yunabba'ul-insānu yauma'iżim bimā qaddama wa akhkhar(a).
Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.
Balil-insānu ‘alā nafsihī baṣīrah(tun).
Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,
Wa lau alqā ma‘āżīrah(ū).
Even if he presents his excuses.
Lā tuḥarrik bihī lisānaka lita‘jala bih(ī).
Move not your tongue with it, [O Muḥammad], to hasten with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān].
Inna ‘alainā jam‘ahū wa qur'ānah(ū).
Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.
Fa iżā qara'nāhu fattabi‘ qur'ānah(ū).
So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.
Ṡumma inna ‘alainā bayānah(ū).
Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].
Kallā bal tuḥibbūnal-‘ājilah(ta).
No! But you [i.e., mankind] love the immediate
Wa tażarūnal-‘ākhirah(ta).
And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.
Wujūhuy yauma'iżin nāḍirah(tun).
[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,
Ilā rabbihā nāẓirah(tun).
Looking at their Lord.
Wa wujūhuy yauma'iżim bāsirah(tun).
And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,
Taẓunnu ay yuf‘ala bihā fāqirah(tun).
Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
Kallā iżā balagatit-tarāqiy(a).
No! When it [i.e., the soul] has reached the collar bones
Wa qīla man…rāq(in).
And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"
Wa ẓanna annahul-firāq(u).
And he [i.e., the dying one] is certain that it is the [time of] separation
Waltaffatis-sāqu bis-sāq(i).
And the leg is wound about the leg,
Ilā rabbika yauma'iżinil-masāq(u).
To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.
Falā ṣaddaqa wa lā ṣallā.
And he [i.e., the disbeliever] had not believed, nor had he prayed.
Wa lākin każżaba wa tawallā.
But [instead], he denied and turned away.
Ṡumma żahaba ilā ahlihī yatamaṭṭā.
And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].
Aulā laka fa'aulā.
Woe to you, and woe!
Ṡumma aulā laka fa'aulā.
Then woe to you, and woe!
Ayaḥsabul-insānu ay yutraka sudā(n).
Does man think that he will be left neglected?
Alam yaku nuṭfatam mim maniyyiy yumnā.
Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?
Ṡumma kāna ‘alaqatan fa khalaqa fa sawwā.
Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allāh] created [his form] and proportioned [him]
Fa ja‘ala minhuz-zaujainiż-żakara wal-unṡā.
And made of him two mates, the male and the female.
Alaisa żālika biqādirin ‘alā ay yuḥyiyal-mautā.
Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
