ONE AYAT A DAY

Surah Al-Qiyamah — The Resurrection

Surah 75 · 40 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

لَآ اُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِۙ

Lā uqsimu biyaumil-qiyāmah(ti).

I swear by the Day of Resurrection

Ayah 2

وَلَآ اُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ

Wa lā uqsimu bin nafsil-lawwāmah(ti).

And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].

Ayah 3

اَيَحْسَبُ الْاِنْسَانُ اَلَّنْ نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهٗ ۗ

Ayaḥsabul-insānu allan najma‘a ‘iẓāmah(ū).

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?

Ayah 4

بَلٰى قٰدِرِيْنَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهٗ

Balā qādirīna ‘alā an nusawwiya banānah(ū).

Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.

Ayah 5

بَلْ يُرِيْدُ الْاِنْسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ اَمَامَهٗۚ

Bal yurīdul-insānu liyafjura amāmah(ū).

But man desires to continue in sin.

Ayah 6

يَسْـَٔلُ اَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيٰمَةِۗ

Yas'alu ayyāna yaumul-qiyāmah(ti).

He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

Ayah 7

فَاِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُۙ

Fa iżā bariqal-baṣar(u).

So when vision is dazzled.

Ayah 8

وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُۙ

Wa khasafal-qamar(u).

And the moon darkens.

Ayah 9

وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُۙ

Wa jumi‘asy-syamsu wal-qamar(u).

And the sun and the moon are joined,

Ayah 10

يَقُوْلُ الْاِنْسَانُ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ اَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّۚ

Yaqūlul-insānu yauma'iżin ainal-mafarr(u).

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"

Ayah 11

كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَۗ

Kallā lā wazar(a).

No! There is no refuge.

Ayah 12

اِلٰى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَىِٕذِ ِۨالْمُسْتَقَرُّۗ

Ilā rabbika yauma'iżinil-mustaqarr(u).

To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.

Ayah 13

يُنَبَّؤُا الْاِنْسَانُ يَوْمَىِٕذٍۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَاَخَّرَۗ

Yunabba'ul-insānu yauma'iżim bimā qaddama wa akhkhar(a).

Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.

Ayah 14

بَلِ الْاِنْسَانُ عَلٰى نَفْسِهٖ بَصِيْرَةٌۙ

Balil-insānu ‘alā nafsihī baṣīrah(tun).

Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,

Ayah 15

وَّلَوْ اَلْقٰى مَعَاذِيْرَهٗۗ

Wa lau alqā ma‘āżīrah(ū).

Even if he presents his excuses.

Ayah 16

لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهٖ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهٖۗ

Lā tuḥarrik bihī lisānaka lita‘jala bih(ī).

Move not your tongue with it, [O Muḥammad], to hasten with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān].

Ayah 17

اِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهٗ وَقُرْاٰنَهٗ ۚ

Inna ‘alainā jam‘ahū wa qur'ānah(ū).

Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.

Ayah 18

فَاِذَا قَرَأْنٰهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْاٰنَهٗ ۚ

Fa iżā qara'nāhu fattabi‘ qur'ānah(ū).

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.

Ayah 19

ثُمَّ اِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهٗ ۗ

Ṡumma inna ‘alainā bayānah(ū).

Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].

Ayah 20

كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّوْنَ الْعَاجِلَةَۙ

Kallā bal tuḥibbūnal-‘ājilah(ta).

No! But you [i.e., mankind] love the immediate

Ayah 21

وَتَذَرُوْنَ الْاٰخِرَةَۗ

Wa tażarūnal-‘ākhirah(ta).

And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.

Ayah 22

وُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌۙ

Wujūhuy yauma'iżin nāḍirah(tun).

[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,

Ayah 23

اِلٰى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ ۚ

Ilā rabbihā nāẓirah(tun).

Looking at their Lord.

Ayah 24

وَوُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍۢ بَاسِرَةٌۙ

Wa wujūhuy yauma'iżim bāsirah(tun).

And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,

Ayah 25

تَظُنُّ اَنْ يُّفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ ۗ

Taẓunnu ay yuf‘ala bihā fāqirah(tun).

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.

Ayah 26

كَلَّآ اِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِيَۙ

Kallā iżā balagatit-tarāqiy(a).

No! When it [i.e., the soul] has reached the collar bones

Ayah 27

وَقِيْلَ مَنْ ۜرَاقٍۙ

Wa qīla man…rāq(in).

And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"

Ayah 28

وَّظَنَّ اَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُۙ

Wa ẓanna annahul-firāq(u).

And he [i.e., the dying one] is certain that it is the [time of] separation

Ayah 29

وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِۙ

Waltaffatis-sāqu bis-sāq(i).

And the leg is wound about the leg,

Ayah 30

اِلٰى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَىِٕذِ ِۨالْمَسَاقُ ۗ ࣖ

Ilā rabbika yauma'iżinil-masāq(u).

To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.

Ayah 31

فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلّٰىۙ

Falā ṣaddaqa wa lā ṣallā.

And he [i.e., the disbeliever] had not believed, nor had he prayed.

Ayah 32

وَلٰكِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلّٰىۙ

Wa lākin każżaba wa tawallā.

But [instead], he denied and turned away.

Ayah 33

ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ اِلٰٓى اَهْلِهٖ يَتَمَطّٰىۗ

Ṡumma żahaba ilā ahlihī yatamaṭṭā.

And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].

Ayah 34

اَوْلٰى لَكَ فَاَوْلٰىۙ

Aulā laka fa'aulā.

Woe to you, and woe!

Ayah 35

ثُمَّ اَوْلٰى لَكَ فَاَوْلٰىۗ

Ṡumma aulā laka fa'aulā.

Then woe to you, and woe!

Ayah 36

اَيَحْسَبُ الْاِنْسَانُ اَنْ يُّتْرَكَ سُدًىۗ

Ayaḥsabul-insānu ay yutraka sudā(n).

Does man think that he will be left neglected?

Ayah 37

اَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّنْ مَّنِيٍّ يُّمْنٰى

Alam yaku nuṭfatam mim maniyyiy yumnā.

Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?

Ayah 38

ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوّٰىۙ

Ṡumma kāna ‘alaqatan fa khalaqa fa sawwā.

Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allāh] created [his form] and proportioned [him]

Ayah 39

فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْاُنْثٰىۗ

Fa ja‘ala minhuz-zaujainiż-żakara wal-unṡā.

And made of him two mates, the male and the female.

Ayah 40

اَلَيْسَ ذٰلِكَ بِقٰدِرٍ عَلٰٓى اَنْ يُّحْيِ َۧ الْمَوْتٰى ࣖ

Alaisa żālika biqādirin ‘alā ay yuḥyiyal-mautā.

Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
