ONE AYAT A DAY

Surah An-Nazi'at — Those Who Drag Forth

Surah 79 · 46 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

وَالنّٰزِعٰتِ غَرْقًاۙ

Wan-nāzi‘āti garqā(n).

By those [angels] who extract with violence

Ayah 2

وَّالنّٰشِطٰتِ نَشْطًاۙ

Wan-nāsyiṭāti nasyṭā(n).

And [by] those who remove with ease

Ayah 3

وَّالسّٰبِحٰتِ سَبْحًاۙ

Was-sābiḥāti sabḥā(n).

And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming

Ayah 4

فَالسّٰبِقٰتِ سَبْقًاۙ

Fas-sābiqāti sabqā(n).

And those who race each other in a race

Ayah 5

فَالْمُدَبِّرٰتِ اَمْرًاۘ

Fal-mudabbirāti amrā(n).

And those who arrange [each] matter,

Ayah 6

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُۙ

Yauma tarjufur-rājifah(tu).

On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation],

Ayah 7

تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ ۗ

Tatba‘uhar-rādifah(tu).

There will follow it the subsequent [one].

Ayah 8

قُلُوْبٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ وَّاجِفَةٌۙ

Qulūbuy yauma'iżiw wājifah(tun).

Hearts, that Day, will tremble,

Ayah 9

اَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ ۘ

Abṣāruhā khāsyi‘ah(tun).

Their eyes humbled.

Ayah 10

يَقُوْلُوْنَ ءَاِنَّا لَمَرْدُوْدُوْنَ فِى الْحَافِرَةِۗ

Yaqūlūna a'innā lamardūdūna fil-ḥāfirah(ti).

They are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?

Ayah 11

ءَاِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَّخِرَةً ۗ

A'iżā kunnā ‘iẓāman nakhirah(tan).

Even if we should be decayed bones?"

Ayah 12

قَالُوْا تِلْكَ اِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ ۘ

Qālū tilka iżan karratun khāsirah(tun).

They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."

Ayah 13

فَاِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌۙ

Fa innamā hiya zajratuw wāḥidah(tun).

Indeed, it will be but one shout,

Ayah 14

فَاِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِۗ

Fa iżā hum bis-sāhirah(ti).

And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.

Ayah 15

هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيْثُ مُوْسٰىۘ

Hal atāka ḥadīṡu mūsā.

Has there reached you the story of Moses? -

Ayah 16

اِذْ نَادٰىهُ رَبُّهٗ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًىۚ

Iż nādāhu rabbuhū bil-wādil-muqaddasi ṭuwā(n).

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā,

Ayah 17

اِذْهَبْ اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ اِنَّهٗ طَغٰىۖ

Iżhab ilā fir‘auna innahū ṭagā.

"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.

Ayah 18

فَقُلْ هَلْ لَّكَ اِلٰٓى اَنْ تَزَكّٰىۙ

Fa qul hal laka ilā an tazakkā.

And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself

Ayah 19

وَاَهْدِيَكَ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشٰىۚ

Wa ahdiyaka ilā rabbika fa takhsyā.

And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"

Ayah 20

فَاَرٰىهُ الْاٰيَةَ الْكُبْرٰىۖ

Fa arāhul-āyatal-kubrā.

And he showed him the greatest sign,

Ayah 21

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصٰىۖ

Fa każżaba wa ‘aṣā.

But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.

Ayah 22

ثُمَّ اَدْبَرَ يَسْعٰىۖ

Ṡumma adbara yas‘ā.

Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting].

Ayah 23

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادٰىۖ

Fa ḥasyara fanādā.

And he gathered [his people] and called out.

Ayah 24

فَقَالَ اَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ الْاَعْلٰىۖ

Fa qāla ana rabbukumul-a‘lā.

And said, "I am your most exalted lord."

Ayah 25

فَاَخَذَهُ اللّٰهُ نَكَالَ الْاٰخِرَةِ وَالْاُوْلٰىۗ

Fa akhażahullāhu nakālal-ākhirati wal-ūlā.

So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]..

Ayah 26

اِنَّ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّمَنْ يَّخْشٰى ۗ ࣖ

Inna fī żālika la‘ibratal limay yakhsyā.

Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].

Ayah 27

ءَاَنْتُمْ اَشَدُّ خَلْقًا اَمِ السَّمَاۤءُ ۚ بَنٰىهَاۗ

A'antum asyaddu khalqan amis-samā'u banāhā.

Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.

Ayah 28

رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوّٰىهَاۙ

Rafa‘a samkahā fa sawwāhā.

He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.

Ayah 29

وَاَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَاَخْرَجَ ضُحٰىهَاۖ

Wa agṭasya lailahā wa akhraja ḍuḥāhā.

And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.

Ayah 30

وَالْاَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ دَحٰىهَاۗ

Wal-arḍa ba‘da żālika daḥāhā.

And after that He spread the earth.

Ayah 31

اَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاۤءَهَا وَمَرْعٰىهَاۖ

Akhraja minhā mā'ahā wa mar‘āhā.

He extracted from it its water and its pasture,

Ayah 32

وَالْجِبَالَ اَرْسٰىهَاۙ

Wal-jibāla arsāhā.

And the mountains He set firmly

Ayah 33

مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِاَنْعَامِكُمْۗ

Matā‘al lakum wa li'an‘āmikum.

As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

Ayah 34

فَاِذَا جَاۤءَتِ الطَّاۤمَّةُ الْكُبْرٰىۖ

Fa iżā jā'atiṭ-ṭāmmatul-kubrā.

But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -

Ayah 35

يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْاِنْسَانُ مَا سَعٰىۙ

Yauma yatażakkarul-insānu mā sa‘ā.

The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,

Ayah 36

وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيْمُ لِمَنْ يَّرٰى

Wa burrizatil-jaḥīmu limay yarā.

And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -

Ayah 37

فَاَمَّا مَنْ طَغٰىۖ

Fa ammā man ṭagā.

So as for he who transgressed

Ayah 38

وَاٰثَرَ الْحَيٰوةَ الدُّنْيَاۙ

Wa āṡaral-ḥayātad-dun-yā.

And preferred the life of the world,

Ayah 39

فَاِنَّ الْجَحِيْمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوٰىۗ

Fa innal-jaḥīma hiyal-ma'wā.

Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.

Ayah 40

وَاَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهٖ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوٰىۙ

Wa ammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihī wa nahan-nafsa ‘anil-hawā.

But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,

Ayah 41

فَاِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوٰىۗ

Fa innal-jannata hiyal-ma'wā.

Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.

Ayah 42

يَسْـَٔلُوْنَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ اَيَّانَ مُرْسٰىهَاۗ

Yas'alūnaka ‘anis-sā‘ati ayyāna mursāhā.

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?

Ayah 43

فِيْمَ اَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرٰىهَاۗ

Fīma anta min żikrāhā.

In what [position] are you that you should mention it?

Ayah 44

اِلٰى رَبِّكَ مُنْتَهٰىهَاۗ

Ilā rabbika muntahāhā.

To your Lord is its finality.

Ayah 45

اِنَّمَآ اَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ مَنْ يَّخْشٰىهَاۗ

Innamā anta munżiru may yakhsyāhā.

You are only a warner for those who fear it.

Ayah 46

كَاَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوْٓا اِلَّا عَشِيَّةً اَوْ ضُحٰىهَا ࣖ

Ka'annahum yauma yaraunahā lam yalbaṡū illā ‘asyiyyatan au ḍuḥāhā.

It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.
