ONE AYAT A DAY

Surah 'Abasa — He Frowned

Surah 80 · 42 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰىٓۙ

‘Abasa wa tawallā.

He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away

Ayah 2

اَنْ جَاۤءَهُ الْاَعْمٰىۗ

An jā'ahul-a‘mā.

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Ayah 3

وَمَا يُدْرِيْكَ لَعَلَّهٗ يَزَّكّٰىٓۙ

Wa mā yudrīka la‘allahū yazzakkā.

But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified

Ayah 4

اَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرٰىۗ

Au yażżakkaru fatanfa‘ahuż-żikrā.

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

Ayah 5

اَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنٰىۙ

Ammā manistagnā.

As for he who thinks himself without need,

Ayah 6

فَاَنْتَ لَهٗ تَصَدّٰىۗ

Fa anta lahū taṣaddā.

To him you give attention.

Ayah 7

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ اَلَّا يَزَّكّٰىۗ

Wa mā ‘alaika allā yazzakkā.

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Ayah 8

وَاَمَّا مَنْ جَاۤءَكَ يَسْعٰىۙ

Wa ammā man jā'aka yas‘ā.

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

Ayah 9

وَهُوَ يَخْشٰىۙ

Wa huwa yakhsyā.

While he fears [Allāh],

Ayah 10

فَاَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهّٰىۚ

Fa anta ‘anhu talahhā.

From him you are distracted.

Ayah 11

كَلَّآ اِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ۚ

Kallā innahā tażkirah(tun).

No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;

Ayah 12

فَمَنْ شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهٗ ۘ

Faman syā'a żakarah(ū).

So whoever wills may remember it.

Ayah 13

فِيْ صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۙ

Fī ṣuḥufim mukarrmah(tin).

[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

Ayah 14

مَّرْفُوْعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ۢ ۙ

Marfū‘atim muṭahharah(tin).

Exalted and purified,

Ayah 15

بِاَيْدِيْ سَفَرَةٍۙ

Bi'aidī safarah(tin).

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

Ayah 16

كِرَامٍۢ بَرَرَةٍۗ

Kirāmim bararah(tin).

Noble and dutiful.

Ayah 17

قُتِلَ الْاِنْسَانُ مَآ اَكْفَرَهٗۗ

Qutilal-insānu mā akfarah(ū).

Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man; how disbelieving is he.

Ayah 18

مِنْ اَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهٗۗ

Min ayyi syai'in khalaqah(ū).

From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?

Ayah 19

مِنْ نُّطْفَةٍۗ خَلَقَهٗ فَقَدَّرَهٗۗ

Min nuṭfah(tin), khalaqahū fa qaddarah(ū).

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

Ayah 20

ثُمَّ السَّبِيْلَ يَسَّرَهٗۙ

Ṡummas-sabīla yassarah(ū).

Then He eased the way for him;

Ayah 21

ثُمَّ اَمَاتَهٗ فَاَقْبَرَهٗۙ

Ṡumma amātahū fa aqbarah(ū).

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

Ayah 22

ثُمَّ اِذَا شَاۤءَ اَنْشَرَهٗۗ

Ṡumma iżā syā'a ansyarah(ū).

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

Ayah 23

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ اَمَرَهٗۗ

Kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarah(ū).

No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

Ayah 24

فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْاِنْسَانُ اِلٰى طَعَامِهٖٓ ۙ

Falyanẓuril-insānu ilā ṭa‘āmih(ī).

Then let mankind look at his food -

Ayah 25

اَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاۤءَ صَبًّاۙ

Annā ṣababnal-mā'a ṣabbā(n).

How We poured down water in torrents,

Ayah 26

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْاَرْضَ شَقًّاۙ

Ṡumma syaqaqnal-arḍa syaqqā(n).

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

Ayah 27

فَاَنْۢبَتْنَا فِيْهَا حَبًّاۙ

Fa'ambatnā fīhā ḥabbā(n).

And caused to grow within it grain

Ayah 28

وَّعِنَبًا وَّقَضْبًاۙ

Wa ‘inabaw wa qaḍbā(n).

And grapes and herbage

Ayah 29

وَّزَيْتُوْنًا وَّنَخْلًاۙ

Wa zaitūnaw wa nakhlā(n).

And olive and palm trees

Ayah 30

وَّحَدَاۤىِٕقَ غُلْبًا

Wa ḥadā'iqa gulbā(n).

And gardens of dense shrubbery

Ayah 31

وَفَاكِهَةً وَّاَبًّا

Wa fākihataw wa abbā(n).

And fruit and grass -

Ayah 32

مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِاَنْعَامِكُمْۗ

Matā‘al lakum wa li'an‘āmikum.

[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

Ayah 33

فَاِذَا جَاۤءَتِ الصَّاۤخَّةُ ۖ

Fa iżā jā'atiṣ-ṣākhkhah(tu).

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

Ayah 34

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ اَخِيْهِۙ

Yauma yafirrul-mar'u min akhīh(i).

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

Ayah 35

وَاُمِّهٖ وَاَبِيْهِۙ

Wa ummihī wa abīh(i).

And his mother and his father

Ayah 36

وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَبَنِيْهِۗ

Wa ṣāḥibatihī wa banīh(i).

And his wife and his children,

Ayah 37

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ شَأْنٌ يُّغْنِيْهِۗ

Likullimri'im minhum yauma'iżin sya'nuy yugnīh(i).

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Ayah 38

وُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌۙ

Wujūhuy yauma'iżim musfirah(tun).

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

Ayah 39

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ۚ

Ḍāḥikatum mustabsyirah(tun).

Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

Ayah 40

وَوُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۙ

Wa wujūhuy yauma'iżin ‘alaihā gabarah(tun).

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

Ayah 41

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ۗ

Tarhaquhā qatarah(tun).

Blackness will cover them.

Ayah 42

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ ࣖ

Ulā'ika humul-kafaratul-fajarah(tu).

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
