ONE AYAT A DAY
Surah 81 · 29 ayahs · Meccan
Iżasy-syamsu kuwwirat.
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
Wa iżan-nujūmunkadarat.
And when the stars fall, dispersing,
Wa iżal-jibālu suyyirat.
And when the mountains are removed
Wa iżal-‘isyāru ‘uṭṭilat.
And when full-term she-camels are neglected
Wa iżal-wuḥūsy ḥusyirat.
And when the wild beasts are gathered
Wa iżal-biḥāru sujjirat.
And when the seas are filled with flame
Wa iżan-nufūsu zuwwijat.
And when the souls are paired
Wa iżal-mau'ūdatu su'ilat.
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked
Bi'ayyi żambin qutilat.
For what sin she was killed
Wa iżaṣ-ṣuḥufu nusyirat.
And when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]
Wa iżas-samā'u kusyiṭat.
And when the sky is stripped away
Wa iżal-jaḥīmu su‘‘irat.
And when Hellfire is set ablaze
Wa iżal-jannatu uzlifat.
And when Paradise is brought near,
‘Alimat nafsum mā aḥḍarat.
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
Falā uqsimu bil-khunnas(i).
So I swear by the retreating stars -
Al-jawāril-kunnas(i).
Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]
Wal-laili iżā ‘as‘as(a).
And by the night as it closes in
Waṣ-ṣubḥi iżā tanaffas(a).
And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]
Innahū laqaulu rasūlin karīm(in).
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]
Żī quwwatin ‘inda żil-‘arsyi makīn(in).
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],
Muṭā‘in ṡamma amīn(in).
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.
Wa mā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūn(in).
And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.
Wa laqad ra'āhu bil-ufuqil-mubīn(i).
And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.
Wa mā huwa ‘alal-gaibi biḍanīn(in).
And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.
Wa mā huwa biqauli syaiṭānir rajīm(in).
And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].
Fa aina tażhabūn(a).
So where are you going?
In huwa illā żikrul lil-‘ālamīn(a).
It is not except a reminder to the worlds
Liman syā'a minkum ay yastaqīm(a).
For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
Wa mā tasyā'ūna illā ay yasyā'allāhu rabbul-‘ālamīn(a).
And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.
