Surah At-Takwir — The Overthrowing

Surah 81 · 29 ayahs · Meccan

Ayah 1

اِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْۖ

Iżasy-syamsu kuwwirat.

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

Ayah 2

وَاِذَا النُّجُوْمُ انْكَدَرَتْۖ

Wa iżan-nujūmunkadarat.

And when the stars fall, dispersing,

Ayah 3

وَاِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْۖ

Wa iżal-jibālu suyyirat.

And when the mountains are removed

Ayah 4

وَاِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْۖ

Wa iżal-‘isyāru ‘uṭṭilat.

And when full-term she-camels are neglected

Ayah 5

وَاِذَا الْوُحُوْشُ حُشِرَتْۖ

Wa iżal-wuḥūsy ḥusyirat.

And when the wild beasts are gathered

Ayah 6

وَاِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْۖ

Wa iżal-biḥāru sujjirat.

And when the seas are filled with flame

Ayah 7

وَاِذَا النُّفُوْسُ زُوِّجَتْۖ

Wa iżan-nufūsu zuwwijat.

And when the souls are paired

Ayah 8

وَاِذَا الْمَوْءٗدَةُ سُىِٕلَتْۖ

Wa iżal-mau'ūdatu su'ilat.

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

Ayah 9

بِاَيِّ ذَنْۢبٍ قُتِلَتْۚ

Bi'ayyi żambin qutilat.

For what sin she was killed

Ayah 10

وَاِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْۖ

Wa iżaṣ-ṣuḥufu nusyirat.

And when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]

Ayah 11

وَاِذَا السَّمَاۤءُ كُشِطَتْۖ

Wa iżas-samā'u kusyiṭat.

And when the sky is stripped away

Ayah 12

وَاِذَا الْجَحِيْمُ سُعِّرَتْۖ

Wa iżal-jaḥīmu su‘‘irat.

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

Ayah 13

وَاِذَا الْجَنَّةُ اُزْلِفَتْۖ

Wa iżal-jannatu uzlifat.

And when Paradise is brought near,

Ayah 14

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ اَحْضَرَتْۗ

‘Alimat nafsum mā aḥḍarat.

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

Ayah 15

فَلَآ اُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِۙ

Falā uqsimu bil-khunnas(i).

So I swear by the retreating stars -

Ayah 16

الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِۙ

Al-jawāril-kunnas(i).

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

Ayah 17

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا عَسْعَسَۙ

Wal-laili iżā ‘as‘as(a).

And by the night as it closes in

Ayah 18

وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَا تَنَفَّسَۙ

Waṣ-ṣubḥi iżā tanaffas(a).

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

Ayah 19

اِنَّهٗ لَقَوْلُ رَسُوْلٍ كَرِيْمٍۙ

Innahū laqaulu rasūlin karīm(in).

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

Ayah 20

ذِيْ قُوَّةٍ عِنْدَ ذِى الْعَرْشِ مَكِيْنٍۙ

Żī quwwatin ‘inda żil-‘arsyi makīn(in).

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

Ayah 21

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ اَمِيْنٍۗ

Muṭā‘in ṡamma amīn(in).

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

Ayah 22

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُمْ بِمَجْنُوْنٍۚ

Wa mā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūn(in).

And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.

Ayah 23

وَلَقَدْ رَاٰهُ بِالْاُفُقِ الْمُبِيْنِۚ

Wa laqad ra'āhu bil-ufuqil-mubīn(i).

And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.

Ayah 24

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِيْنٍۚ

Wa mā huwa ‘alal-gaibi biḍanīn(in).

And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.

Ayah 25

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطٰنٍ رَّجِيْمٍۚ

Wa mā huwa biqauli syaiṭānir rajīm(in).

And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

Ayah 26

فَاَيْنَ تَذْهَبُوْنَۗ

Fa aina tażhabūn(a).

So where are you going?

Ayah 27

اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعٰلَمِيْنَۙ

In huwa illā żikrul lil-‘ālamīn(a).

It is not except a reminder to the worlds

Ayah 28

لِمَنْ شَاۤءَ مِنْكُمْ اَنْ يَّسْتَقِيْمَۗ

Liman syā'a minkum ay yastaqīm(a).

For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

Ayah 29

وَمَا تَشَاۤءُوْنَ اِلَّآ اَنْ يَّشَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ ࣖ

Wa mā tasyā'ūna illā ay yasyā'allāhu rabbul-‘ālamīn(a).

And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.
